DJ Jason Rullo at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden

On October 26, 2024, I had the absolute honor of providing DJ entertainment for Caroline and Ryan’s unforgettable wedding at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden  in Oakdale, PA. From the very first meeting with them, it was crystal clear how deeply they loved each other and how excited they were to celebrate their big day. They had one goal in mind: to throw a RAGER of a party that everyone would remember for years to come.

Caroline and Ryan’s enthusiasm was infectious. When I shared with them that their wedding would be my final one of the 2024 season, they looked at me and said, “Let’s make it one to remember then.” And let me tell you, they delivered on that promise in every way imaginable.  Huge shoutout to Danny Gorman Photography for these amazing shots!

The Venue

The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden was the perfect backdrop for their celebration. Surrounded by nature’s beauty, the venue’s charm added an extra layer of magic to the event. From the ceremony to the reception, every detail was thoughtfully planned to create an unforgettable experience for their guests.  We also got to work with one of our FAVORITE wedding planners, Joyful Events by Jade, who nailed every detail of the big day.

Services Provided

To ensure Caroline and Ryan’s vision came to life, we pulled out all the stops with our comprehensive entertainment package:

  • DJ & MC Services: Featuring our sleek new DJ booth, which added a modern and stylish touch to the setup.  Also included intelligent lighting to really set the party off when it was time to dance.

  • Full Room Decor Uplighting: The incandescent colored uplighting transformed the venue into a vibrant, elegant space that set the mood for a night of celebration.

  • Ceremony PA and Music Playback: Every guest could hear the heartfelt vows and enjoy the beautiful ceremony music.  We provided microphones for the officiant, readers, and for Caroline and Ryan’s personally written vows.

  • Additional Sound System for the Dinner Area: This ensured seamless audio coverage, so the atmosphere stayed lively and engaging throughout dinner.

The Party

The reception was electric from start to finish. Guests packed the dance floor all night long, fueled by an epic playlist tailored to Caroline and Ryan’s taste. From timeless classics to the latest hits, every track kept the energy high and the vibes immaculate. Seeing everyone—young and old—dancing together was a testament to the love and joy that Caroline and Ryan radiated.

By the end of the night, it was clear that their wedding wasn’t just a celebration—it was an experience. I’m beyond grateful to have been a part of their special day and to have ended my 2024 wedding season on such an incredible high note.

Caroline and Ryan ended their wedding reception with a private last dance.
The song they chose was “Last Shot” – by Kip Moore

Why a Photo Booth is a Must-Have for Your Next Event

Planning an event means juggling dozens of decisions, from the venue and décor to food and entertainment. While many details will make your event memorable, adding a photo booth is one guaranteed way to elevate the experience for your guests. Whether it’s a wedding, birthday party, corporate event, or holiday gathering, here’s why a photo booth should be on your must-have list.

1. Entertainment for All Ages

Photo booths provide fun and laughter for guests of all ages. From kids to grandparents, everyone loves stepping into the booth, donning quirky props, and striking a pose. It’s an interactive activity that keeps your guests engaged throughout the event.

2. Create Lasting Memories

Photo booths give your guests a tangible keepsake to take home. These photos serve as cherished reminders of the special moments shared at your event. Plus, many modern photo booths offer digital copies, so memories can be easily shared on social media or saved to personal collections.

3. Encourage Social Interaction

A photo booth acts as a social magnet, bringing people together who may not have otherwise interacted. It’s a fantastic icebreaker that helps guests loosen up and connect. The fun of picking props, striking poses, and seeing the final result sparks conversation and camaraderie.

4. Customizable to Fit Your Theme

Photo booths are highly adaptable and can be tailored to match your event’s theme. From backdrops and props to personalized photo templates, a well-designed photo booth seamlessly complements your décor and adds to the event’s aesthetic.

5. Professional-Quality Photos Without a Photographer

Photo booths today are equipped with high-quality cameras, lighting, and printers. They provide studio-like results without the need for a dedicated photographer for every candid moment. You can even opt for features like green screens, GIFs, and slow-motion videos for added creativity.

6. Stress-Free Entertainment

One of the best parts about a photo booth is how easy it is for event hosts. Once it’s set up, it runs itself, requiring little to no supervision. You can focus on enjoying your event while your guests have a blast capturing memories.

7. Perfect for Branding Opportunities

For corporate events or branded parties, photo booths are an excellent marketing tool. You can customize prints with logos, slogans, or event hashtags, ensuring your brand stays top of mind every time someone glances at their photo.

8. Capture the Fun You Might Miss

As the host, you’re often busy attending to multiple responsibilities and may miss some of the candid fun your guests are having. A photo booth ensures those moments are captured, so you can look back and see how much joy your event brought to everyone.

Final Thoughts

A photo booth isn’t just an accessory—it’s an experience. It adds value to your event by providing entertainment, fostering connections, and creating memories that last long after the day is over. So if you’re looking for that extra touch to make your event unforgettable, a photo booth is the way to go.

Ready to add some photo booth magic to your next event? Let’s make it happen!

Mother Son Dance Songs

The mother-son dance is a very symbolic moment of the night at a wedding reception.  This significant dance is the groom’s opportunity to share with others just how much he loves his mom, and to thank her for everything that he’s given her. Choosing the song to accompany such a heartwarming time can be a big decision and I often have clients struggle picking out the perfect song.

Need help finding that special mother-son wedding dance song? Check out these tunes which are a sure bet to have mom shedding happy (and sentimental) tears with each step.
  • God Only Knows – The Beach Boys – A timeless, beautiful love song.
  • You Are My Sunshine – Morgane Stapleton with Chris Stapleton – Your mom might have sung this to you when you were in diapers. Salute her by bringing it full circle with this remake
  • Moon River – Audrey Hepburn
  • You’ll Be in My Heart – Phil Collins – Let her know that you’ll always be thinking of her.
  • I’ll Be There – Jackson 5 – this ballad sends the perfect message of “even when I’m not there, I’ll always be there for you.”
  • Lean on Me – Bill Withers – Your mom has been there through all the hard times, right?
  • What a Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong – Calming classic for sure
  • Child of Mine – Carole King – This one won’t leave a dry eye in the house.
  • Time After Time – Iron and Wine – a new take on a classic hit that is slowed down and perfect for the occasion.
  • Over the Rainbow – Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole – Can’t go wrong with this classic
  • Just the Way You Are – Billy Joel
  • Isn’t She Lovely – Stevie Wonder – An ode to the first woman in your life
  • Sweetest Devotion – Adele –  What else is there to say, it’s Adele!
  • You’re My Best Friend – Queen – Mama’s boy anthem?
  • Mother Like Mine – The Band Perry – A country ode to your mother, perfect for a barn style wedding.
  • Simple Man – Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • Our Song – Ellie Goulding – The original certainly gets the job done, but something about this remake just hits different.
  • Days Like This – Van Morrison
  • Unforgettable – Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole
  • Home – Jack Johnson – For the  Jack Johnson lover.

Wedding DJ Placement. Setting your Reception up for success.

Are you planning your wedding? Maybe you’re at the seating chart step. Are you asking yourself “Where do I put my DJ at the wedding”?   If so, consider the Wedding DJ placement tips in this post to help energize your DJ experience.  Many couples often overlook the importance of laying out a comfortable, sensible reception space, and just assume that venue managers have their best interests in mind. However, that’s not always the case!

Every bride & groom wants their wedding day to go smoothly, have happy guests, and be an amazing dance party that everyone will talk about for years to come.

There’s no doubt there’s a lot to consider when planning your seating chart:

  • What shape is the room?
  • How many guests will be in attendance?
  • Is there a focal point in the room (i.e. a big fireplace or a wall of windows?)
  • …and most importantly, where is the dance floor and will your venue give you flexibility to place the dance floor where you want?

Try to make your dance floor the center of attention (after the bride/groom of course)

We don’t see this too often anymore, but sometimes the venue has the dance floor around the corner in an awkwardly shaped room or even in a separate room altogether.   This may cause your guests to miss your spotlight dances (i.e. first dance, cake cutting, bouquet toss, etc…).  Its also a far walk for your guests to get to the dance floor which usually leads to them just mingling by their tables (no matter how amazing the DJ is).

My next point and the reason for this post….

Place your DJ next to the dance floor.

Exhibit A.  The image below shows the DJ in a corner, very far away from the dance floor.  DON’T. DO. THIS.  “Nobody puts DJ in a corner”.

dj placement at a wedding
Bad example of where to place your DJ at your wedding.

Your DJ needs to interact with & read your crowd

While you may not have opted for a interactive DJ, there is still a level of interaction that is required with any Wedding DJ.  Even if it is just basic announcements and directing your guests on where to look for the next formality.

One of the best skills your DJ should have is the ability to read a crowd that is on the dance floor.  Reading a crowd & their reactions to the songs being play helps the DJ continue to curate an awesome set to keep your guests on the floor the rest of the evening.

If the DJ is too far from the dance floor or worse yet, can’t see it at all, you are limiting his/her ability to provide an amazing experience for you and your guests, not to mention the energy disconnect between the DJ and the crowd.

Tables between your DJ and the Dance Floor = bad experience for guests at those tables

This becomes tough balancing act for the DJ because he/she will need to accommodate volume levels for those guests seated at the tables closest to the speakers AND for those guests the furthest away.

The most ideal location for the DJ setup is right next to the dance floor, bonus points if the dance floor is in the middle of the room!  If you can, arrange tables in a “U” around the dance floor, with the head table opposite the dance floor from the DJ. This allows the DJ to cover the entire ballroom acoustically with balance.  Ideally, you want the sound to be loudest on the dance floor and a little quieter out by the tables so guests can converse comfortably.

But, I don’t want the DJ in the background of all my photos.

Hiring a professional photographer will take care of this concern for you.  Any pro photographer should be experienced enough to shoot away from the DJ to get some pretty amazing shots.   DJ equipment these days aren’t big and bulky anymore, well ours isn’t at least 😉

Some final tips when it comes to reception layout

  • Don’t put the BAR outside of the main room if at all possible.
  • Don’t create a lounge space outside of the room.
  • Don’t position guest tables too close to each other (keep them close, but comfortable).

You probably found this because you are planning an upcoming wedding.  Congratulations!  You\’re probably wondering when you should hire all of your professional vendors/services. The advice you will find online is probably a little bit confusing.

Like anything, the longer you wait to do something, the fewer the options there is for you to pick from.  Sometimes when you wait too long, you most definitely won\’t get your first choice, maybe even your second or third.

What is your Wedding Date?

Another thing to consider is the date of your wedding.  Each year, we notice a few key dates that everyone seems to fight over.

Is the DJ in high demand?

I always tell potential clients looking for a great DJ, make sure at a minimum, you pick your wedding day and secure your reception venue.  We price our services based on the specifics of your wedding day and the venue has a lot to do with that price quote.

On average, most of my past clients have booked me at least a year in advance.
